Rare 1920s Gold Metallic Lace Duster Coat with Ombré Fringe Scarf
If words could even describe this coat! Amazing, rare, and absolutely stunning hand-woven 1920s metallic gold and black metal lace duster coat with silk chiffon cuffs and attached ombré fringe scarf. The amount of workmanship that went into making this original flapper coat is truly phenomenal. The metallic threads appear to have been woven into the black mesh entirely by hand. It is even couched in some areas. Click to zoom in to each photo and enjoy this breathtaking textile. Ultra-long and full bell sleeves add dramatic detail, while a green silk faille strip of fabric is sewn into the bottom of the coat to add weight and structure.
Today, not much remains of early metallic lace because it was ultimately melted down to recover the precious metal. Typically, weavers made metallic threads by twisting fine metallic strips around silk thread and plating in genuine silver and gold. Just like a fine piece of jewelry, this coat sparkles and catches light wonderfully.
In excellent and wearable condition with only a few minor breaks in the lace as seen in the photos. I hope the new owner will enjoy this piece as much as I have!
Size: One size will fit most women up to a size 8 or 10 (in the 1920s the fit of the garment was meant to be loose)- please see detailed measurements for more info. The sleeves are long.
Shoulder to Shoulder:17"
Bust: up to 42"
Hips: up to 44"
Sleeve Length: 22"
I am a size 6 and it fits me really nicely - it is slightly big in the shoulders (my shoulders are a size 16" across) but the looseness doesn't bother me because that is the style of the 1920s. If you are a size 8 or 10 I think it will also be good. It really could work for a lot of sizes even a size 4 or 2 because the looser the better in my opinion.
Condition: As described above, in truly excellent and wearable condition. Few breaks in lace as seen in the photos. No evidence of repair that I can see. Some fading to green silk faille fabric in the scarf. Some metallic threads loose at cuffs. Vibrant and gold, there is hardly any tarnish to the metal threads.
